James 4:8 (KJV)
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”
What Does It Mean to "Draw Near to God"?
To "draw near" means to come close. It’s not physical distance but spiritual closeness. God isn’t far away. He’s waiting for us to turn toward Him with honest hearts. Drawing near involves prayer, worship, and repentance.
Psalm 145:18
“The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.”
Hebrews 10:22
“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience…”
“He Will Draw Near to You”
God’s response to our desire is closeness. He is not passive or distant. When we take a step toward Him, He responds with love, grace, and presence.
Jeremiah 29:13
“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
Cleanse Your Hands
James calls for clean hands—symbolic of our actions. To be close to God, we must leave behind sinful behavior. This is not about being perfect, but being honest and willing to change.
Isaiah 1:16
“Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil.”
Purify Your Hearts
This part goes deeper than actions. God looks at our motives and desires. Purifying our hearts means getting rid of double-mindedness—trying to serve both God and the world.
Matthew 5:8
“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”
Psalm 24:3-4
“Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? ... He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart.”
The Problem of Being Double-Minded
Double-mindedness means being torn between two masters. It’s trying to live for God while also living for self, sin, or the world.
James 1:8
“A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
Real-Life Example
Think of a friendship. If you only talk to a friend when you need something, or you keep secrets from them, the relationship grows distant. But if you spend time together, speak openly, and stay loyal, that bond grows strong.
It’s the same with God. Drawing near means investing in the relationship—daily prayer, reading His Word, repentance, and worship.
