Gideon was one of the most surprising heroes in the Bible. He started out scared and unsure, but God used him in powerful ways. His story is found mainly in Judges 6–8, and it teaches us about courage, obedience, and faith. Let’s look at ten interesting facts about Gideon and what we can learn from his life.
1. Gideon Was Hiding When God Called Him
Gideon was not a bold warrior at first. In fact, when the angel of the Lord found him, he was hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat so the Midianites wouldn't steal it.
Judges 6:11 – “Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites.”
God saw something in Gideon that even Gideon didn’t see in himself.
2. He Was From the Weakest Tribe
Gideon came from the tribe of Manasseh. He even said his family was the weakest in the whole tribe, and he was the least in his family.
Judges 6:15 – “My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.”
This shows that God often chooses unlikely people to do His work.
3. God Called Him a “Mighty Warrior”
Even while Gideon was hiding, the angel called him a “mighty warrior.” This shows that God speaks into our potential, not just our present state.
Judges 6:12 – “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.”
Gideon didn’t feel mighty, but God saw what he could become.
4. Gideon Asked for Signs
Gideon wanted to be sure it was really God speaking to him. He asked for several signs, including fire on an offering and dew on a fleece.
Judges 6:36–40 – Gideon puts out a fleece twice to confirm God’s promise.
While this showed his doubts, God was patient with him.
5. He Tore Down a Pagan Altar
One of Gideon’s first tasks from God was to destroy his father’s altar to Baal and the Asherah pole beside it. He did it at night because he was afraid.
Judges 6:27 – “But because he was afraid... he did it at night rather than in the daytime.”
Even when we’re scared, obedience matters.
6. Gideon’s Army Was Too Big
God told Gideon to reduce his army from 32,000 to just 300 men. God didn’t want Israel to think they won by their own strength.
Judges 7:2 – “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me.”
Victory doesn’t depend on numbers, but on God.
7. The Battle Plan Was Strange
Gideon’s army didn’t use swords to start the fight. They used trumpets, jars, and torches. They surrounded the camp and shouted, causing panic among the enemy.
Judges 7:20 – “They blew their trumpets and smashed the jars... ‘A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!’”
God’s ways are not our ways.
8. Gideon Refused to Be King
After the victory, the people wanted to make Gideon their king. He refused, saying God should rule over them.
Judges 8:23 – “I will not rule over you... The Lord will rule over you.”
Gideon stayed humble even after great success.
9. He Made a Mistake with an Ephod
Later, Gideon made an ephod (a kind of priestly garment) from the gold he collected. Sadly, the people started to worship it.
Judges 8:27 – “It became a snare to Gideon and his family.”
Even good leaders can make poor choices if they stop seeking God.
10. Gideon Is in the Hall of Faith
Despite his fears and failures, Gideon is remembered as a man of faith in the New Testament.
Hebrews 11:32 – “And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon...”
God honors those who trust Him, even when they struggle.
