Understanding the God of the Bible

When people ask, “Who is God?” they are often looking for more than just facts. They want to know what He is like, how He relates to us, and why He matters. The Bible tells us that God is not distant or silent. He has revealed Himself in many ways—through creation, His Word, and His Son, Jesus.

God Is the Creator

God is the One who made everything. The Bible starts with this truth:

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."
Genesis 1:1

Everything we see—mountains, oceans, stars, animals, and people—exists because God made it. This shows us His power, creativity, and care.

God Is Eternal and Unchanging

God doesn’t grow old, get tired, or change His mind. He is not like us. He exists outside of time.

"Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God."
Psalm 90:2
"I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed."
Malachi 3:6

God Is Holy and Perfect

God is completely good and pure. He hates sin and cannot be around it. His holiness sets Him apart from all others.

"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory."
Isaiah 6:3
"God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all."
1 John 1:5

God Is Love

God's love isn’t just a feeling—it’s action. The Bible says He loved the world so much that He sent His Son to save us.

"God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them."
1 John 4:16
"But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:8

God Is Just and Righteous

God always does what is right. He judges fairly and holds people accountable.

"The Lord is righteous in all His ways and faithful in all He does."
Psalm 145:17
"He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in His truth."
Psalm 96:13

God Is Near and Personal

God is not far away. He wants a relationship with us. He hears our prayers and walks with those who trust Him.

"The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth."
Psalm 145:18
"Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you."
1 Peter 5:7

God Is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

The Bible shows us one God in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is known as the Trinity.

"Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
Matthew 28:19
"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one."
Deuteronomy 6:4

Jesus Reveals the Father

If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. He is God in human form.

"The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation."
Colossians 1:15
"Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father."
John 14:9

Jesus came to show us the heart of God, to forgive sins, and to bring us back to Him.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the presence of God living within believers. He comforts, teaches, and guides. Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit after He returned to the Father.

"And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth."
John 14:16–17
"But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
John 14:26
"The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children."
Romans 8:16
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."
Galatians 5:22–23
"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good."
1 Corinthians 12:7

Why It Matters

Knowing who God is changes how we live. When we understand that He is holy, we want to live right. When we see that He is love, we learn to love others. When we believe He is near, we stop feeling alone.

And when we walk with the Holy Spirit, we are never without help. He gives us strength, comfort, and wisdom for each step of our journey with God.

But maybe you don’t feel close to God. Maybe you’re not sure if you know Him at all. The truth is, we all fall short of God’s holiness. The Bible says:

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Romans 3:23

Because of sin, we are separated from God. We can’t fix this on our own. But God didn’t leave us stuck. In His great love, He sent Jesus to rescue us.

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 6:23

Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again on the third day. Through faith in Him, we can be forgiven and made new.

"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
Romans 10:9
"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Romans 5:1

So who is God? He is our Creator, Judge, Savior, and Friend. He is the One who made you, loves you, and invites you into a new life through Jesus Christ.
