Matthew 28:19 is one of the most powerful verses in the New Testament. Often called “The Great Commission,” it carries Jesus’ final instructions to His disciples before He ascended into heaven. It is not just a command for those first followers but for all believers throughout history.
The Verse Itself
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” — Matthew 28:19 (ESV)
This verse is short, but it carries a lifetime of purpose. Jesus sends His people into the world with a mission: share the gospel, teach, and baptize in the name of the triune God.
The Call to Go
The first command is to “go.” Faith is never meant to be kept private. It is lived out and shared. This does not mean everyone must move overseas. Some are called to distant lands, while others share their faith right where they live. Acts 1:8 echoes this call:
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” — Acts 1:8 (ESV)
Making Disciples
Jesus did not say to make converts only. He said to make disciples—people who grow, learn, and live out their faith daily. Discipleship is a lifelong journey of following Christ. Paul reinforces this in 2 Timothy 2:2:
“And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” — 2 Timothy 2:2 (ESV)
This shows a multiplying effect—disciples making disciples who, in turn, teach others.
Baptism in the Triune Name
Baptism is a public act of faith and obedience. Jesus instructs His followers to baptize “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This reveals the unity of the Trinity. Baptism marks the believer’s entrance into the community of faith. Romans 6:4 explains this picture:
“We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” — Romans 6:4 (ESV)
A Mission for All Generations
Matthew 28:19 is not limited to the early church. It is a mission for every believer. Whether by teaching children, sharing Christ with neighbors, supporting missionaries, or living faithfully at work, each Christian plays a role in fulfilling the Great Commission.
Ways Believers Live Out Matthew 28:19
- Supporting global missions through prayer and giving
- Teaching Scripture in homes, churches, or small groups
- Living out Christ’s love through service and kindness
- Sharing personal testimonies with friends and family
The Promise That Follows
Jesus does not give this mission without encouragement. The very next verse offers assurance:
“And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” — Matthew 28:20 (ESV)
The task may feel overwhelming, but Christ’s presence gives courage and strength.
