The phrase “Jesus wept” is found in John 11:35. At just two words, it is the shortest verse in the Bible in many translations. Yet, this small verse carries deep meaning, revealing the compassion and humanity of Jesus Christ.

The Context of John 11:35
The verse comes during the story of Lazarus, a close friend of Jesus who had died. Lazarus’s sisters, Mary and Martha, were grieving, and many friends and neighbors had come to mourn with them. When Jesus arrived, He was deeply moved by their sorrow.
John 11:33 — When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.
John 11:34 — And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
It was in that moment—before performing the miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead—that Jesus wept.
Why Did Jesus Weep?
While Jesus knew He was about to raise Lazarus, His tears showed that He was not cold or distant from human pain. He felt the sorrow of those around Him and grieved with them. This tells us that God is not indifferent to our struggles.
