Paul is credited with writing 13 books (or letters) in the New Testament. These books are called “epistles,” and they were written to churches or individuals.

Did Paul Write Hebrews?
This is a debated topic. The Book of Hebrews does not name its author. For a long time, many believed Paul wrote it. But modern scholars mostly agree that it was written by someone else. The style and tone are different from Paul’s other letters.
So, most people say Paul wrote 13 books, not 14.
What Makes a Letter “Paul’s”?
Paul’s letters usually follow a pattern:
- He says who he is.
- He greets the church or person.
- He gives thanks and then begins teaching.
- He ends with personal notes and blessings.
Example – Philippians 1:1–2:
“Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi... Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Letters Written While in Prison
Paul wrote several of his letters while he was in prison for preaching about Jesus. These are called the “Prison Epistles”:
- Ephesians
- Philippians
- Colossians
- Philemon
Even while jailed, Paul kept encouraging the church.
Philippians 4:4: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.”
Letters to Church Leaders
Three of Paul’s letters were written to individuals leading churches. These are often called the “Pastoral Epistles”:
- 1 Timothy
- 2 Timothy
- Titus
1 Timothy 4:12: “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”
Why Paul's Letters Matter
Paul’s writings help believers understand:
- Salvation by faith – Romans 3:28: “For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.”
- Life in the Spirit – Galatians 5:22–23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control...”
- Unity in the church – Ephesians 4:3–6: “There is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism…”
- Perseverance – 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
