What Does "God Is Spirit" Mean?

The phrase “God is spirit” comes from John 4:24:

"God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." – John 4:24 (NKJV)

This verse tells us something very important. God isn’t like us. He doesn’t have a body like people do. He’s not made of flesh or bone. He is spirit—eternal, invisible, and everywhere at once.

God being spirit means He isn’t limited to one place or time. He can be with you at home, with someone else across the world, and in heaven—all at the same time.

“Can anyone hide himself in secret places, so I shall not see him? … Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord. – Jeremiah 23:24

“No one has seen God at any time.” – John 1:18

God Is Not a Man

It’s easy to picture God like a big man in the sky. But the Bible says clearly:

"God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent." – Numbers 23:19

God’s nature is not human. He doesn't grow old or get tired. He doesn't forget things. He’s not bound by physical needs or weaknesses. He is spirit—perfect and powerful.

What Does It Mean to Worship in Spirit?

When Jesus said we must worship in spirit and truth, He meant worship isn’t just about singing songs or going to church. It starts in the heart. It’s about being real with God.

Since God is spirit, He looks at the inside—your heart, your faith, your honesty. He’s not impressed by how loud we sing or how nice we dress. He wants our worship to be full of love, truth, and trust.

“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7

Because God is spirit:

• He sees your heart. You don’t have to pretend.
• He can’t be destroyed. He’s eternal.
• He moves in ways we can’t always see.

The Bible says:

"Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever." – 1 Timothy 1:17

God being spirit also means He’s not limited by the physical world. Miracles are possible. Prayer changes things. His Holy Spirit lives in believers and helps us every day.

“Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” – 1 Corinthians 3:16

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” – Romans 8:16

Real Life Example

Think about the wind. You can’t see it, but you know it’s there. You feel it. You see the trees move. That’s kind of like how God works. You might not see Him with your eyes, but you can feel His presence and see what He does in your life.

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” – John 3:8

People who trust God say they’ve felt peace when things were hard. They’ve seen answers to prayers. These are signs that the Spirit of God is at work—even though He can’t be seen.
