What Jesus meant and how it still moves mountains today.

What Is the Faith of a Mustard Seed?

The phrase "faith of a mustard seed" comes from the teachings of Jesus. It reminds us that even the smallest amount of faith can do great things when placed in God.

Jesus’ Words on Mustard Seed Faith

Matthew 17:20 — “He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’”

Jesus said this after His disciples couldn’t heal a boy. He wasn’t criticizing small faith—He was encouraging them that even the smallest real faith is powerful when rooted in God.

Why a Mustard Seed?

Mustard seeds are tiny, one of the smallest seeds grown in ancient gardens. But when planted, they grow into large plants. Jesus used this to teach how small faith can grow and impact the world.

Mark 4:30–32 — “Again He said, ‘What shall we say the kingdom of God is like... It is like a mustard seed... Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.’”
Luke 13:19 — “It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.”

Small faith isn't worthless. It's the starting point for something bigger—something God grows.

Moving Mountains with Faith

In Scripture, mountains represent big problems, fears, or spiritual battles. When Jesus said faith can move them, He meant God can overcome anything through our trust in Him.

Zechariah 4:6–7 — “‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground.’”
Psalm 46:1 — “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
Isaiah 41:10 — “So do not fear, for I am with you... I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

God doesn’t ask us to be strong—just to believe that He is.

When Faith Is Tested, It Grows

James 1:2–3 — “Consider it pure joy... whenever you face trials... because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
Romans 5:3–4 — “We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

Faith is like a seed. Pressure, struggle, and time help it grow strong.

Examples of Mustard-Seed Faith

Example Scripture Outcome
Persistent Widow Luke 18:1–8 Justice given
Woman with Blood Issue Mark 5:34 Healing
Centurion Matthew 8:10,13 Servant healed
Blind Bartimaeus Mark 10:52 Sight restored
Disciples in Storm Matthew 8:26 Storm calmed
Hebrews 11:1 — “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

Growing Your Faith

You don’t need big faith—just true faith.

  • Read God's Word
  • Pray daily, even if it’s short
  • Obey in small steps
  • Remember what God has already done
Romans 10:17 — “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
2 Corinthians 12:9 — “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’”

God honors even a whisper of faith.
