When we think of demons today, our minds often picture red-skinned creatures with horns, bat wings, or snarling fangs. But these popular images mostly come from folklore, horror films, and medieval art—not from Scripture. So what does a biblically accurate demon actually look like? And what does the Bible teach us about their purpose and origin?

Let’s look at what the Bible really says about demons—and what it doesn’t.

What Are Demons in the Bible?

Demons are real spiritual beings. They are not mythical or symbolic. In the Bible, demons are most often seen as unclean spirits who serve Satan and oppose God.

In the New Testament, Jesus and His followers cast out demons many times. These spirits caused suffering, fear, and confusion. Their goal was (and still is) to steal, kill, and destroy.

John 10:10 (NIV) – “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
Luke 4:41 (NIV) – “Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, 'You are the Son of God!' But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.”
Matthew 12:43 (ESV) – “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none.”

Where Did Demons Come From?

The Bible doesn’t directly say where demons came from, but there are a few strong clues. The most common belief among Bible scholars is that demons are fallen angels—angels who followed Satan when he rebelled against God.

Revelation 12:9 (ESV) – “And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”
2 Peter 2:4 (NIV) – “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment…”

Another view is that demons are the spirits of the Nephilim, the offspring of angels and human women mentioned in Genesis 6.

Genesis 6:2 (KJV) – “The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.”
Genesis 6:4 (NIV) – “The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them.”

What Do Demons Look Like?

The Bible does not describe demons' physical appearance in detail. Unlike angels, who sometimes appear in human form (Genesis 18:2), demons rarely show up visibly. They usually act by possessing people or animals.

Luke 8:30–33 (NIV) – “Jesus asked him, ‘What is your name?’ ‘Legion,’ he replied, because many demons had gone into him… the demons came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.”
Matthew 8:16 (ESV) – “That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick.”
Popular Culture Biblical Reality

Demonic wings Only angels are mentioned with wings

What Can Demons Do?

In the Bible, demons are powerful but limited. They can:

  • Possess or torment people
Mark 5:8 (NIV) – “For Jesus had said to him, ‘Come out of this man, you impure spirit!’”
  • Cause physical illness
Matthew 9:32–33 (NIV) – “While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke.”
  • Influence false teachings
1 Timothy 4:1 (ESV) – “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons.”
  • Delay God’s messengers
Daniel 10:13 (NIV) – “But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me…”

But demons cannot:

  • Overcome God’s power
James 2:19 (NIV) – “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.”
  • Defeat those who are sealed by the Holy Spirit
1 John 4:4 (NIV) – “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
  • Act without God’s permission
Job 1:12 (NIV) – “The Lord said to Satan, ‘Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.’”

Jesus Has Authority Over Demons

One of the main themes in the Gospels is Jesus' authority over demons. Wherever He went, demons obeyed Him. People were amazed by how He spoke with power.

Mark 1:27 (NIV) – “The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, 'What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.'”
Matthew 8:29 (ESV) – “And behold, they cried out, ‘What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?’”

Jesus gave His followers this same authority. Through Him, we are protected.

Luke 10:19 (ESV) – “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.”

Can Christians Be Possessed?

This is a common question. The Bible shows that believers can be tempted, attacked, or oppressed by demons—but not possessed. Possession means full control. Those filled with the Holy Spirit belong to God.

1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV) – “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?”
2 Corinthians 1:22 (NIV) – “[God] set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.”
Romans 8:9 (ESV) – “You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.”

Final Thoughts

Demons are real, and they are active. But they are also defeated. Christ’s death and resurrection sealed their fate.

You don’t need to fear demons when you walk with Jesus. Instead of being drawn to scary images or superstition, keep your focus on the truth of God’s Word.

James 4:7 (NIV) – “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Colossians 2:15 (NIV) – “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”
