Gath was one of the main Philistine cities in the Bible. It was home to giants, kings, and warriors. It also had moments of peace and conflict with Israel. Here are ten interesting facts about Gath that show its importance in Bible history.

1. Gath Was One of the Five Main Philistine Cities

Gath was part of the group of five powerful Philistine cities. These cities were Ashkelon, Ashdod, Gaza, Ekron, and Gath. They often worked together and were enemies of Israel.

Joshua 13:3 – “From the Shihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of Ekron northward… the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites.”

2. Goliath Was from Gath

Gath is best known as the hometown of Goliath, the giant who fought David. Goliath was very tall and strong, and he scared the Israelite army before David defeated him.

1 Samuel 17:4 – “And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.”

3. Gath Had Other Giants Too

Goliath wasn’t the only giant from Gath. The Bible says there were more giants in Gath who later fought against David’s men.

2 Samuel 21:20-22 – “And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature… These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.”

4. David Hid in Gath

Before he became king, David ran away from King Saul. He went to Gath and stayed there to be safe. But to avoid being killed, he pretended to be crazy.

1 Samuel 21:10-13 – “And David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath... and he changed his behavior before them…”

5. King Achish of Gath Gave David a Place to Stay

Even though David had killed Goliath, King Achish allowed him to stay in Gath. Later, Achish gave David and his men the town of Ziklag.

1 Samuel 27:5-6 – “And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes… Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day…”

6. Gath Was a Strong Fortress

Gath was known as a strong and well-defended city. It was hard to attack, and many feared it.

2 Chronicles 11:8-9 – “And Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph… fortified cities, which are in Judah and Benjamin.”

7. Gath Was Eventually Destroyed

Though Gath was powerful, it was later defeated. The Bible doesn’t give many details, but by the time of Amos the prophet, Gath had already fallen.

Amos 6:2 – “Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms?”

8. The Ark Was Taken Near Gath

When the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant, they brought it near Gath. But trouble followed wherever the Ark went.

1 Samuel 5:8-9 – “Therefore they sent the ark of God to Gath… there was a very great destruction.”

9. Gath Was in Judah’s Territory

Even though Gath was a Philistine city, it was close to the border of Judah. Sometimes it was under Israelite control.

2 Kings 12:17 – “Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took it…”

10. Gath Is a Reminder of God’s Power

Though Gath had giants and strong warriors, it could not stand against God’s plan. David, a young shepherd, defeated Goliath with God’s help.

1 Samuel 17:45 – “Then said David… I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel…”
