Egypt plays a major role throughout the Bible. It is a land of rescue, bondage, miracles, and prophecy. These 10 facts show how Egypt weaves through the story of God’s people.

1. Egypt Was a Refuge for Abraham

Abraham (then Abram) sought safety in Egypt during a severe famine. It was his first journey away from the land God promised him.

Genesis 12:10 – “Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land.”

Genesis 12:11 – “And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, ‘Indeed I know that you are a woman of beautiful countenance.’”

2. Joseph Rose to Power in Egypt

God used Joseph’s suffering to raise him up as a ruler in Egypt, saving lives during famine.

Genesis 41:41 – “And Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.’”

Genesis 50:20 – “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.”

3. Egypt Became a Place of Slavery for the Israelites

Generations after Joseph, the Israelites became slaves under a new king.

Exodus 1:8-9 – “Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. And he said to his people, ‘Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we.’”

Exodus 1:13-14 – “So the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with rigor. And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage...”

4. God Sent Plagues on Egypt

To force Pharaoh to let His people go, God sent ten plagues that challenged Egypt's false gods.

Exodus 7:5 – “And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from among them.”

Exodus 9:14 – “For at this time I will send all My plagues to your very heart... that you may know that there is none like Me in all the earth.”

The Ten Plagues

Plague Description
1 Water turned to blood (Exodus 7)
2 Frogs (Exodus 8)
3 Lice (Exodus 8)
4 Flies (Exodus 8)
5 Livestock disease (Exodus 9)
6 Boils (Exodus 9)
7 Hail (Exodus 9)
8 Locusts (Exodus 10)
9 Darkness (Exodus 10)
10 Death of the firstborn (Exodus 12)

5. The Exodus Took Place in Egypt

The Exodus was the most significant event in Israel’s early history. God parted the Red Sea and led His people out by His mighty hand.

Exodus 14:21-22 – “Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea... the waters were divided. So the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground.”

Exodus 12:51 – “And it came to pass, on that very same day, that the Lord brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt according to their armies.”

6. Egypt Was a Warning Against Going Backward

Returning to Egypt meant turning away from God. The Lord warned His people never to return.

Deuteronomy 17:16 – “But he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses...”

Jeremiah 42:19 – “The Lord has said concerning you, O remnant of Judah, ‘Do not go to Egypt!’”

Numbers 14:4 – “So they said to one another, ‘Let us select a leader and return to Egypt.’”

7. Egypt Was a Place of Refuge for Jesus

When King Herod sought to kill Jesus, Joseph fled to Egypt with Mary and Jesus, fulfilling prophecy.

Matthew 2:14-15 – “When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt... ‘Out of Egypt I called My Son.’”

Hosea 11:1 – “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son.”

8. Egypt Was Known for Its Idols and False Gods

God judged Egypt not only for enslaving Israel but also for its false religion and idolatry.

Ezekiel 30:13 – “Thus says the Lord God: ‘I will also destroy the idols, and cause the images to cease from Noph...’”

Isaiah 19:1 – “Behold, the Lord rides on a swift cloud, and will come into Egypt; the idols of Egypt will totter at His presence...”

Jeremiah 46:25 – “I will bring punishment on Amon of No, and Pharaoh and Egypt, with their gods and their kings.”

9. Egypt Symbolized Worldly Trust

Israel often looked to Egypt instead of relying on God. Prophets warned against trusting Egypt.

Isaiah 31:1 – “Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help... but who do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!”

Ezekiel 29:6-7 – “Then all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the Lord... when they leaned on you, you broke and tore all their shoulders.”

Isaiah 30:2 – “Who walk to go down to Egypt, and have not asked My advice...”

10. Egypt Will Have a Role in Future Prophecy

God’s plan includes Egypt in future blessings. Egypt will know the Lord and worship Him.

Isaiah 19:21 – “Then the Lord will be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians will know the Lord in that day... they will make a vow to the Lord and perform it.”

Zechariah 14:18 – “If the family of Egypt will not come up and enter in, they shall have no rain... this shall be the punishment of Egypt.”
