“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” – Psalm 147:3 (ESV)

Life is full of pain. People face loss, rejection, fear, and sadness. But Psalm 147:3 gives comfort. God sees the pain, and He cares. He is not far away. He is close and ready to heal.

This verse shows God as a gentle healer. He doesn’t ignore wounds—He binds them. He doesn't rush past sorrow—He enters into it.

God Heals the Brokenhearted

A broken heart can come from many things. Maybe a loved one died. Maybe someone betrayed you. Maybe life just feels empty. But no matter the cause, God knows every heartache. He sees the tears no one else sees.

Psalm 34:18
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 73:26
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

God doesn't wait for you to be strong. He meets you right where you are—in the pain. He doesn't ask you to fix yourself first. He begins the healing.

God Binds Up Wounds

The second part of Psalm 147:3 says God "binds up their wounds." This picture is tender and caring. Like a parent wrapping a child’s scraped knee, God gently tends to our hurts.

Isaiah 61:1
“He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.”

Jeremiah 30:17
“For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the Lord.”

God’s healing may take time. He may use people, prayer, rest, or even silence. But His care is never harsh. He works with love and patience.

A God Who Understands Pain

God understands pain because Jesus experienced it. Jesus was betrayed, mocked, beaten, and crucified. He wept. He felt sorrow.

Hebrews 4:15
“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”

John 11:35
“Jesus wept.”

Isaiah 53:4-5
“Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows… he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities… and with his stripes we are healed.”

Real-Life Example

Imagine a person who lost a child. The grief is unbearable. Friends try to help but don’t know what to say. Time passes, but the pain stays.

Then, one night, the person reads Psalm 147:3. It feels personal. They pray, asking God for healing. Slowly, through prayer, the Word, and comfort from others, they begin to feel peace. The loss never fully goes away, but God carries them through it.
