Reading the Bible can feel overwhelming at first. It’s a big book with many stories, poems, and lessons. But the Bible is God’s Word, and it’s meant for you. Whether you're new or returning after time away, this guide will help you take your first steps.

Start with Prayer

Before you open your Bible, start with prayer. Ask God to help you understand His Word.

James 1:5 (ESV)
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
Psalm 119:18 (NIV)
“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.”

Choose the Right Bible Translation

Some versions are easier to read than others. Here are a few good choices for beginners:

Translation Description
NLT (New Living Translation) Easy to understand and great for devotional reading
ESV (English Standard Version) A balance between word-for-word and thought-for-thought
NIV (New International Version) Clear and commonly used in churches

Start in the New Testament

The Bible is split into two main parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. Start with the New Testament, especially the Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

John 20:31 (NIV)
“But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
Matthew 11:28-29 (NIV)
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Read a Little Each Day

You don’t have to read the whole Bible in one year. Start small.

Here’s a simple plan:

  • Day 1-7: Read 1 chapter of John each day
  • Day 8-14: Start the book of Mark
  • Day 15+: Try reading Psalms or Proverbs
Joshua 1:8 (ESV)
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.”

Ask Questions as You Read

Don’t just read—think about what it means.

  • What is happening in this passage?
  • What does this say about God?
  • Is there a command to obey?
  • Is there a promise to hold on to?
Psalm 119:105 (NIV)
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
Romans 15:4 (NIV)
“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.”

Use Bible Study Tools

There are tools that can help you understand what you’re reading:

  • Study Bibles: Offer notes and background on each verse
  • Bible apps: Like YouVersion or Blue Letter Bible
  • Devotionals: Daily readings with reflection questions
Proverbs 4:7 (NIV)
“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.”

Read with Others

Reading the Bible with a friend or small group can help you grow faster. You’ll learn from each other and stay encouraged.

Proverbs 27:17 (ESV)
“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”
Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV)
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together... but encouraging one another.”

Don’t Give Up

There may be days you don’t understand what you read. That’s okay. Keep going. God will honor your effort.

Isaiah 55:11 (NLT)
“It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.”
Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
