Lydia is a remarkable woman in the New Testament. She was one of the first people in Europe to follow Jesus. Her story shows how God uses everyday people to do great things. Even though we don’t know much about her, the Bible gives us some important details.

Here are 10 interesting facts about Lydia in the Bible.

1. Lydia Sold Purple Cloth

Lydia was a businesswoman. She sold purple fabric, which was very expensive and worn by rich or royal people.

Acts 16:14 – “And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.”

This shows Lydia was likely wealthy and respected in her community.

2. She Was from Thyatira

Lydia came from the city of Thyatira, known for its dyeing industry and trade guilds.

Revelation 2:18 – “And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass.”

Though she was from Thyatira in Asia Minor, Lydia was living in Philippi (Macedonia) when Paul met her.

3. Lydia Worshipped God Before Meeting Paul

Before becoming a Christian, Lydia already believed in the God of Israel. She likely followed Jewish customs and met with others for prayer.

Acts 16:13 – “And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.”

Acts 16:14 – “...which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened...”

Lydia was already seeking God when Paul shared the Gospel.

4. She Was the First Convert in Europe

Lydia is known as the first recorded European to believe in Jesus.

Acts 16:15 – “And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there.”

Her faith helped begin the church in Europe, starting in Philippi.

5. Lydia Was Baptized Right Away

Lydia responded to the Gospel without delay. She was baptized the same day she believed.

Acts 2:41 – “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”

Acts 16:15 – “And when she was baptized, and her household…”

This reflects the pattern of immediate baptism in the early Church.

6. Her Whole Household Followed Her Faith

Lydia’s faith influenced her entire household. They were baptized along with her, showing that she led them spiritually.

Joshua 24:15 – “...as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Acts 16:15 – “...and her household…”

Though we don’t know who exactly made up her household, they followed her lead in faith.

7. Lydia Invited Paul and His Friends to Her Home

After her conversion, Lydia invited Paul, Silas, and others to stay in her home. She offered them support and hospitality.

Hebrews 13:2 – “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”

Acts 16:15 – “...she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there.”

Her invitation was bold and generous.

8. Her Home Became a Meeting Place for Believers

Later, Paul and Silas return to Lydia’s home after being released from prison. Other believers were gathered there.

Acts 16:40 – “And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.”

Her home likely became the first house church in Philippi.

9. Lydia Showed Courage and Boldness

In a culture where women had limited public roles, Lydia was a bold example of faith. She used her position to serve God.

Proverbs 31:25 – “Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.”

Her actions went beyond tradition. She was generous, welcoming, and committed.

10. God Opened Lydia’s Heart

Even though Paul preached, it was God who opened Lydia’s heart to receive the message of Jesus.

John 6:44 – “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him…”

Acts 16:14 – “...whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.”

Faith begins with God’s work in the heart.
