Goliath is one of the most well-known characters in the Bible. His name is often used to describe a huge challenge or an unbeatable enemy. But the story of Goliath is about more than size—it shows God's power to overcome what seems impossible.

1. Goliath Was a Giant

Goliath was not just tall—he was enormous. According to 1 Samuel 17:4, he was "six cubits and a span," which is over 9 feet tall!

“A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. His height was six cubits and a span.” – 1 Samuel 17:4 (NIV)

2. He Was a Champion Fighter

The Bible calls Goliath a “champion,” meaning he was the best warrior among the Philistines. He had likely fought and won many battles.

“Then a champion came out from the armies of the Philistines named Goliath, from Gath…” – 1 Samuel 17:4 (NASB)

3. His Armor Was Heavy and Impressive

Goliath wore a bronze helmet and a coat of mail that weighed 5,000 shekels—about 125 pounds. He also carried a large spear, and the iron point alone weighed around 15 pounds.

“He wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels; on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung on his back.” – 1 Samuel 17:5–6

He was a walking tank.

4. He Mocked God and the Israelites

Goliath didn't just challenge Israel—he mocked their God. He taunted the Israelites for 40 days, morning and evening, trying to get someone to fight him.

“For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand.” – 1 Samuel 17:16

5. David Was Just a Boy When He Fought Goliath

David wasn’t a trained soldier. He was a young shepherd boy. But he had faith in God and experience protecting sheep from lions and bears.

“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty…” – 1 Samuel 17:45

6. Goliath Was from Gath

Gath was one of the five major Philistine cities. It was known for warriors and even other giants.

“And there was again war with the Philistines at Gath, where there was a man of great stature…” – 2 Samuel 21:20

7. He Was Killed with a Single Stone

David used a sling and one smooth stone to strike Goliath in the forehead. The giant fell face down to the ground.

“Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead.” – 1 Samuel 17:49

David then used Goliath’s own sword to cut off his head.

8. Goliath Trusted in Weapons, Not God

Goliath relied on his strength, armor, and weapons. But David trusted only in God.

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” – Psalm 20:7

9. His Defeat Changed the Battle

When Goliath fell, the Philistines ran away in fear, and Israel chased them. The victory sparked a major turning point for Israel.

“When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran.” – 1 Samuel 17:51

10. Goliath’s Story Is a Picture of God’s Power

Goliath seemed unbeatable, but God used a young boy to defeat him. This reminds us that no problem is too big for God.

“Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,” says the Lord Almighty. – Zechariah 4:6

Even today, people use the phrase “David vs. Goliath” when a small person takes on a big challenge.
