Is Yahweh Jesus? Understanding Yahweh and the Deity of Christ

The question is Yahweh Jesus gets to the heart of who Jesus truly is. The Bible teaches there is one God, yet the New Testament shows Jesus doing, saying, and receiving things that belong to Yahweh alone.

This does not mean Jesus is the Father. Scripture teaches that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct persons. Yet Jesus fully shares the divine nature.

To understand this well, we need to let Scripture speak.

Is Yahweh Jesus According to the Bible?

The Bible teaches that Yahweh is the one true God. It also teaches that Jesus is not a created being, angel, or mere prophet. He is eternal, divine, and worthy of worship.

The New Testament often uses Old Testament Yahweh passages and applies them to Jesus. This is one of the clearest ways Scripture reveals the deity of Christ.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus is the Word made flesh. He is with God, and He is God.

Jesus Is Yahweh, But Not the Father

When Christians say Jesus is Yahweh, they do not mean Jesus is the same person as the Father. They mean Jesus shares the one divine identity of Yahweh.

The Father is God. The Son is God. The Holy Spirit is God. Yet there is only one God.

This is why the question is Yahweh Jesus must be answered with care. Jesus is Yahweh in His divine nature, but He is not the Father.

Jesus Used the Divine Name "I AM"

One of the strongest moments comes in John 8. Jesus told the religious leaders that Abraham rejoiced to see His day. They were shocked because Jesus was not yet fifty years old.

Then Jesus made a stunning claim.

Jesus did not only say He existed before Abraham. He used the words "I AM."

This points back to God's words to Moses at the burning bush.

The leaders understood the claim. They picked up stones because they saw it as blasphemy. Their reaction shows they understood the answer to the question is Yahweh Jesus—Jesus was identifying Himself with the divine name of God.

Yahweh in the New Testament and Jesus

The New Testament does not avoid the Old Testament name of God. Instead, it shows that Jesus belongs within the identity of Yahweh.

One clear example comes from Isaiah. Yahweh says every knee will bow to Him.

By myself I have sworn. The word has gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and will not be revoked, that to me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath.

Paul applies that language to Jesus.

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

This is not a small honor given to a creature. It is divine worship given to Christ.

Jesus Does What Yahweh Does

Another reason to answer yes to is Yahweh Jesus is that Jesus does the works of Yahweh.

Yahweh creates. Jesus creates.

For by him all things were created in the heavens and on the earth, visible things and invisible things, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things have been created through him and for him.

Yahweh saves. Jesus saves.

She shall give birth to a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.

Yahweh judges. Jesus judges.

For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son.

Yahweh receives worship. Jesus receives worship.

Jesus is not treated as a servant who points away from Himself. He is worshiped as Lord and God.

Jesus Is the Good Shepherd

In the Old Testament, Yahweh is the shepherd of His people.

Yahweh is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing.

Jesus takes that title for Himself.

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

This is not a random image. Jesus is showing that He fulfills what Yahweh promised to be for His people.

He does not merely teach about God's care. He is God's care in flesh.

Jesus Shares Yahweh's Glory

Yahweh says He will not give His glory to another.

I am Yahweh. That is my name. I will not give my glory to another, nor my praise to engraved images.

Yet Jesus speaks of the glory He had with the Father before the world existed.

Now, Father, glorify me with your own self with the glory which I had with you before the world existed.

This matters. If Jesus were only a created being, He could not share Yahweh's eternal glory.

The deity of Christ is not added later by Christians. It is woven into the words, works, worship, and glory of Jesus in Scripture.

Why This Matters for Salvation

The question is Yahweh Jesus is not only a theology question. It is a Gospel question.

If Jesus is not truly God, He cannot fully reveal God. If Jesus is not truly man, He cannot stand in our place. But Scripture presents Him as both: God the Son who became flesh to save sinners.

Only Yahweh can save. Yet the New Testament says salvation is found in Jesus.

There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved!

Sin separates us from the holy God. We cannot repair that by good works, religious effort, or moral improvement.

Jesus came as God in the flesh to do what we could not do. He lived without sin, died for sinners, and rose again in victory.

For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God.

Because Jesus is Yahweh in the flesh, His sacrifice is enough. His grace is enough. His promise is enough.

How Should We Respond to Jesus?

If Jesus is Yahweh, then He deserves more than respect. He deserves worship, trust, obedience, and surrender.

We should not treat Jesus as only a wise teacher. We should receive Him as Lord.

Here are simple ways to respond:

• Believe that Jesus is truly God and truly man.
• Trust His death and resurrection for salvation.
• Worship Him as Lord.
• Obey His words.
• Rest in His power to save.
• Follow Him with a renewed heart.

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me."

Jesus does not simply show one possible path to God. He is the way to the Father.

The Biblical Answer

So, is Yahweh Jesus? Yes, Jesus shares the divine identity of Yahweh. He is eternal, holy, glorious, Creator, Savior, Judge, Shepherd, and Lord.

But Jesus is not the Father. He is the eternal Son, sent by the Father, who became flesh for our salvation.

The Bible leads us to a clear confession: Jesus Christ is Lord. The biblical answer to is Yahweh Jesus is that He fully shares the divine identity of Yahweh and is worthy of our trust, worship, and surrender.

Therefore let all the house of Israel know certainly that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.
