Peter confronted Ananias.

Peter says that Ananias had lied to the Holy Spirit.

The connection is direct.

Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit, and Peter said that he had lied to God.

Acts 5 Explained: Lying to the Holy Spirit

Acts 5 is important because Peter does not describe the Holy Spirit as something belonging to God in the way that power or wisdom belongs to Him.

Peter speaks about the Holy Spirit as someone who can be lied to.

Then he identifies that lie as a lie against God.

The logic of the passage is simple:

• Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit.
• Peter said Ananias lied to God.
• Therefore, the Holy Spirit is identified with God.

This is why Acts 5 is often used when explaining the deity of the Holy Spirit.

Peter did not say Ananias had merely offended a divine influence. He had sinned against the Holy Spirit Himself.

The passage also shows that the Holy Spirit is personal. You cannot lie to an impersonal force.

The Holy Spirit Has the Qualities of a Person

Some people think of the Holy Spirit as God's power rather than as a Person.

But Scripture describes Him in personal terms.

Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would teach His followers.

The Holy Spirit Knows the Things of God

David connects God's Spirit with God's presence.

He cannot escape from either.

This does not mean that the Holy Spirit is simply another name for God's presence. Rather, it shows that the Spirit possesses a quality Scripture associates with God Himself.

God is not limited by space.

The Holy Spirit Gives Life

Is the Holy Spirit God or God's Power?

The Holy Spirit certainly displays God's power, but Scripture does not describe Him as merely God's power.

Power does not speak.

Power cannot be lied to.

Power does not make decisions.

Power cannot be grieved.

Yet Scripture says that the Holy Spirit does all of these things.

The Holy Spirit also directs ministry.

The Spirit actively guided the apostles.

He was not simply an energy they possessed. He exercised His own will in directing their work.

The Holy Spirit and Salvation

Jesus explained that spiritual life comes through the Spirit.

God gives new life.

The Spirit works within believers so that their lives begin to change as they follow Christ.

Acts 5 identifies lying to the Holy Spirit with lying to God. The Spirit speaks, teaches, guides, knows the things of God, can be grieved, gives life, and dwells within believers.

At the same time, Scripture distinguishes the Holy Spirit from both the Father and the Son.

These truths belong together.

The Father is God.

The Son is God.

The Holy Spirit is God.

Yet Scripture teaches one God, not three gods.

The deity of the Holy Spirit is therefore an important part of the biblical foundation for the Trinity. Christians do not worship the Holy Spirit as a lesser spiritual being or think of Him as an impersonal force.
