Who is Jesus? This is one of the most important questions anyone can ask. The answer shapes how we understand God, salvation, truth, and eternal life.

Jesus is more than a teacher, prophet, or moral example. The Bible presents Him as God the Son, the eternal Word who became human, lived without sin, died for sinners, rose from the dead, and now reigns as Lord.

To answer who is Jesus with confidence, we must listen to what Scripture says about Him. Human opinions change, but God's Word gives a clear and lasting answer.

Who Is Jesus According to the Bible?

The Bible teaches that Jesus is fully God and fully human. He did not begin to exist when He was born in Bethlehem. He existed before creation and entered the world as a real man.

John begins his Gospel by calling Jesus "the Word." He explains that the Word was with God and was God.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

A few verses later, John says that the Word became flesh. God the Son took on a human nature and lived among us.

The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus Is God the Son

Jesus Existed Before His Birth

Jesus' human life began in Mary's womb, but His person did not begin there. He existed before Abraham, before the world, and before time as we know it.

Jesus said to them, "Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM."

Jesus Is the Creator

What Makes Jesus Unique?

Many people have taught about God. Many prophets spoke messages from God. Jesus stands apart from all of them.

No prophet, angel, teacher, or king can make these claims. This is why the question "Who is Jesus?" cannot be answered by calling Him only a good man.

A merely good man would not accept worship, forgive sins by His own authority, claim eternal existence, or call Himself one with the Father. Jesus' words and works demand a greater answer.

Jesus Reveals the Father

When Philip asked Jesus to show the disciples the Father, Jesus replied:

Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, 'Show us the Father?'"

Jesus did not mean that He is the Father. He meant that He perfectly reveals the Father. His compassion shows God's mercy. His holiness shows God's purity. His truth shows God's faithfulness.

The identity of Jesus helps us understand the heart of God. In Christ, we see that God is not distant from sinners. He came near.

Jesus Has Authority to Forgive Sins

Only God has the right to forgive sins committed against Him. Yet Jesus forgave sins by His own authority.

When a paralyzed man was brought to Him, Jesus first addressed the man's deepest need:

Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, "Son, cheer up! Your sins are forgiven you."

Jesus then healed the man to show that He had authority to forgive sins. His miracle supported His claim.

Jesus Came to Save Sinners

Who is Jesus, and why did He come? The answer is not only about His nature. It is also about His mission.

Human beings were created by God, but all have sinned. Sin separates us from God and brings guilt, judgment, and death.

Jesus came to do what sinners could never do for themselves. He lived a righteous life and gave Himself as the sacrifice for sin.

But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Jesus' death was not an accident or defeat. He willingly took the punishment sinners deserve.

He then rose from the dead. His resurrection showed that His sacrifice was accepted and that death had been defeated.

It is possible to know facts about Jesus without trusting Him. The Bible calls each person to respond with faith.

Jesus once asked His disciples who people said He was. Then He made the question personal:

He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

That question still matters. Who is Jesus to you?

The right response is not to invent a version of Jesus that fits our desires. We must receive Him as Scripture reveals Him: God the Son, the risen Lord, and the only Savior.

To trust Jesus means turning from sin and resting in His finished work. It means believing that He died and rose again, confessing Him as Lord, and following Him.

Because if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Salvation is not earned by good works, religious effort, or family background. It is God's gift received through faith in Christ.

How Should We Respond to Jesus?

Because Jesus is who the Bible says He is, He deserves more than respect. He deserves worship, trust, love, and obedience.

• Follow His teaching.
• Worship Him as God the Son.
• Share the good news about Him with others.

Who is Jesus? He is the eternal Word, the Creator, the Son of God, the perfect man, the sinless Savior, and the risen Lord.

He came to reveal the Father, bear the guilt of sinners, defeat death, and bring eternal life to all who believe. The most important response is not only to understand His identity, but to place your faith in Him.
