Jesus Is God and Son of God: How Can Both Be True?

Jesus is God and Son of God at the same time. These two truths may sound hard to put together, especially if "Son of God" sounds like Jesus must be less than God or somehow came into existence after God the Father. That is not how the Bible uses these titles.

Scripture identifies Jesus as truly God while also distinguishing Him from God the Father. Jesus is not the Father, yet He shares the divine identity. He is the eternal Son who came into the world and became truly human.

Understanding how Jesus is God and Son of God helps us avoid a common misunderstanding about the Trinity. "Son of God" does not mean "less than God." It reveals who Jesus is in relation to the Father.

Jesus Is God and Son of God in the Bible

The New Testament does not force us to choose between saying Jesus is God and saying Jesus is the Son of God.

It teaches both.

John begins his Gospel by describing Jesus as the eternal Word:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Two important truths appear in the same sentence.

The Word was with God. This shows personal distinction.

The Word was God. This shows His divine identity.

John is not saying the Father and Son are the same Person. He is saying that the eternal Word is distinct from the Father while also being fully divine.

That is the foundation for understanding why Jesus is God and Son of God without contradiction.

Is Jesus God?

Yes. Scripture directly identifies Jesus as God.

After Jesus rose from the dead, Thomas saw Him and said:

Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"

Thomas does not call Jesus merely a prophet, teacher, or heavenly messenger.

His confession supports the biblical truth that Jesus is God and Son of God.

Jesus does not correct Thomas.

Instead, this confession fits the message John has been developing throughout his Gospel. The Word was God in John 1:1, and Thomas recognizes the risen Jesus as God near the end of the book.

The question is Jesus God is therefore answered clearly by Scripture.

Jesus is fully divine.

Why Is Jesus Called the Son of God?

If Jesus is God, why is Jesus called the Son of God?

The title describes His unique relationship with the Father.

Jesus is not called the Son because He was created by the Father in the way human children begin to exist through their parents.

The Son already existed before His human birth.

Jesus prayed:

Now, Father, glorify me with your own self with the glory which I had with you before the world existed.
John 17:5 (WEB)

Jesus speaks of glory He had with the Father before the world existed.

The Son did not begin to exist in Bethlehem.

He shared glory with the Father before creation.

So the Son of God meaning cannot simply be "someone God created."

The title points to the eternal relationship between the Father and the Son.

The Son Existed Before Creation

John makes the Son's eternal existence even clearer.

Speaking about the Word, he says:

All things were made through him. Without him, nothing was made that has been made.
John 1:3 (WEB)

Everything that was created came into existence through the Word.

That means Jesus cannot belong to the category of created things.

The Son is not part of creation.

He is the One through whom creation came into being.

This is another reason Jesus is God and Son of God cannot mean that Jesus is a lesser or created divine being.

"Son of God" Does Not Mean "A Second God"

Another misunderstanding happens when people hear "Father" and "Son" and imagine two separate gods.

The Bible does not teach that.

Jesus Himself affirmed that there is one God.

Jesus answered, "The greatest is, 'Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.'"

Christian teaching remains monotheistic.

There is one God.

The Father is God.

The Son is God.

The Holy Spirit is God.

Yet Christians do not worship three gods.

When Scripture teaches that Jesus is God and Son of God, it is not adding another deity beside the Father.

It is revealing personal distinction within the one God.

Jesus Is Not God the Father

This distinction is important.

Jesus is God, but Jesus is not the Father.

Jesus speaks to the Father.

He prays to the Father.

The Father sends Him.

The Father loves Him.

At Jesus' baptism, the Father speaks from heaven while Jesus stands in the water.

Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

The Father speaks about the Son.

That means Father and Son are not two names for the same Person.

At the same time, personal distinction does not mean there are two gods.

The biblical picture is one God with real distinction between Father and Son.

Jesus God or Son of God Is the Wrong Choice

The phrase Jesus God or Son of God makes the issue sound like we must choose one title.

Scripture does not make that choice.

Jesus is God and the Son of God.

These titles answer different questions.

Calling Jesus God tells us something about what He is.

Calling Jesus the Son tells us something about who He is in relation to the Father.

The two truths fit together.

The Father Loves the Son

The relationship between the Father and Son is not a temporary arrangement that began when Jesus was born.

Jesus speaks of a genuine relationship with the Father.

He says:

For the Father loves the Son, and shows him all things that he himself does.
John 5:20 (WEB)

The Father loves the Son.

Jesus also speaks of His own love for the Father:

But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father commanded me, even so I do.
John 14:31 (WEB)

These are personal relationships.

The Father is not simply another name for Jesus.

The Son is not merely a temporary form of the Father.

The Father loves the Son, and the Son loves the Father.

The Son Shares the Father's Divine Honor

Some people assume that if Jesus is the Son, He must receive less honor than the Father.

Jesus says otherwise.

He explains:

That all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn't honor the Son doesn't honor the Father who sent him.
John 5:23 (WEB)

Jesus says the Son should be honored even as the Father is honored.

That would be a shocking statement if Jesus were merely a created being.

Yet it makes sense if Jesus is God and Son of God.

The Son is distinct from the Father, but He shares the divine honor that belongs to God.

The Fullness of Deity Dwells in Jesus

Paul gives another clear statement.

Speaking about Christ, he writes:

For in him all the fullness of the Deity dwells bodily.
Colossians 2:9 (WEB)

Jesus does not possess part of deity.

He does not have a reduced version of deity.

Paul says all the fullness of deity dwells in Him.

This helps answer the Son of God meaning question.

Being the Son does not make Jesus partly divine.

The Son is fully divine.

Jesus Became Human Without Ceasing to Be God

One reason this subject can become confusing is that Jesus truly became human.

John writes:

The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

The eternal Word became flesh.

The truth that Jesus is God and Son of God remains unchanged when the Son takes on a real human nature.

He took on a real human nature.

Jesus became hungry.

He became tired.

He prayed.

He suffered.

He died.

These experiences belong to His real humanity.

But the One who became human is the same eternal Word whom John has already identified as God.

Why Jesus Prays to the Father

People sometimes ask, "If Jesus is God, why does He pray to God?"

The question makes sense if we assume "God" always means one Person.

But the Bible distinguishes between the Father and Son.

Jesus prays to the Father because the Son is not the Father.

Before His crucifixion, Jesus prayed:

He went forward a little, fell on his face, and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not what I desire, but what you desire."

Jesus' prayer reveals both His relationship with the Father and His real humanity.

It does not prove that Jesus is not God.

Instead, it shows the Son willingly obeying the Father as He carries out His saving mission.

Why the Father Sends the Son

Scripture repeatedly says the Father sent the Son.

John writes:

We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as the Savior of the world.
1 John 4:14 (WEB)

The one who sends and the one who is sent are distinct.

The Father sends.

The Son comes.

This does not mean the Father is God while Jesus is something less.

It shows personal distinction and different roles in God's saving work.

The Father sends the Son into the world to save sinners.

"Only Begotten Son" Does Not Mean Jesus Was Created

Some Bible passages describe Jesus as God's "only begotten" or "one and only" Son.

This language can sometimes be misunderstood to mean that Jesus began to exist.

John says:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:16 (WEB)

The point is the Son's unique relationship with the Father.

Jesus is not one son among many sons in the same sense.

Believers may become children of God by grace, but Jesus is the Son in a unique way.

The eternal Son does not become divine.

He is divine.

Jesus Is the Son in a Unique Sense

Believers are also called children of God.

John says:

But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God's children, to those who believe in his name.
John 1:12 (WEB)

Notice the difference.

Believers become God's children.

The Son does not become the Son by believing, adoption, or spiritual rebirth.

Jesus has a unique eternal relationship with the Father.

This distinction helps us understand why Jesus Son of God means something different from Christians being called sons and daughters of God.

The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Are Distinct

Understanding that Jesus is God and Son of God also prepares us to understand the Trinity.

Jesus commands His disciples:

Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are named distinctly.

Yet Jesus says "in the name," not "in the names."

The verse does not give a complete explanation of God's nature, but it fits the pattern found throughout Scripture.

There is one God.

There are real personal distinctions.

The Son is neither the Father nor the Holy Spirit.

Yet the Son is fully divine.

Why This Does Not Contradict the Trinity

The statement Jesus is God and Son of God is not a contradiction because the two titles describe different aspects of His identity.

A contradiction would say:

"Jesus is God and Jesus is not God."

The Bible does not say that.

Nor does it say:

"Jesus is the Father and Jesus is not the Father."

Instead, Scripture teaches:

• Jesus is God.
• Jesus is the Son.
• The Son is not the Father.
• The Father is God.
• There is one God.

Those statements may be mysterious, but they are not logically contradictory.

The mystery comes from God's nature being greater than our everyday human categories.

Why This Matters for the Gospel

The identity of Jesus matters because the Gospel depends on who came to save us.

Human beings have sinned against God.

We cannot remove our guilt or restore ourselves to Him.

God acts to save.

The Father sends the Son into the world.

The eternal Son becomes human, lives in perfect obedience, dies for sinners, and rises from the dead.

Paul writes:

But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law, that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of children.
Galatians 4:4-5 (WEB)

The Savior is not merely a good man sent by God.

He is not merely a prophet.

He is not a created heavenly being.

The One who comes to redeem sinners is God's own Son, fully divine and truly human.

That is why Jesus is God and Son of God is not a minor theological detail.

It is part of the heart of the Gospel.

Faith in the Son Brings Life

John explains why he wrote his Gospel:

But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

John wants readers to believe that Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God.

Yet this is the same Gospel that begins by saying the Word was God and includes Thomas calling Jesus "my God."

There is no conflict in John's mind.

Jesus is the Son of God.

Jesus is God.

Faith in Him brings life.

How Can Both Be True?

The Bible's answer becomes clearer when we stop treating "God" and "Son of God" as competing titles.

Jesus is God according to His divine nature and identity.

Jesus is the Son according to His eternal relationship with the Father.

The Father is not the Son, and the Son is not the Father.

Yet the Son does not possess a lesser deity.

He existed before creation, created all things, shared glory with the Father, receives divine honor, and possesses the fullness of deity.

So when someone asks, Jesus God or Son of God?, the biblical answer is:

Both.

Jesus is God and Son of God. He is the eternal Son who was with the Father before the world existed, became flesh for our salvation, died and rose again, and offers eternal life to everyone who believes in Him.
