Characteristics of God: What the Bible Reveals About His Nature

The characteristics of God show us who God is, what He loves, how He acts, and why we can trust Him. The Bible does not leave us guessing about what is God like. God reveals Himself through His Word, His works, His Son, and His dealings with people.

God is not like us, yet He makes Himself known to us. He is holy, loving, just, merciful, faithful, wise, and unchanging.

When we study the character of God, we are not just learning facts. We are learning to worship, trust, obey, and draw near to the One who made us.

What Are the Characteristics of God?

The characteristics of God are the truths the Bible reveals about who God is. These include His holiness, love, justice, mercy, wisdom, power, faithfulness, and goodness.

Some people use the phrase attributes of God to describe these same truths. An attribute is a quality that belongs to God. His character is not random or changing. God is always who He is.

The characteristics of God are not pieces of Him. God is not partly holy and partly loving. He is fully holy, fully loving, fully just, and fully good at the same time.

The Characteristics of God Begin with His Holiness

God's holiness means He is completely pure, set apart, and unlike anyone else. He has no sin, no evil, and no moral weakness.

Holiness is not just one part of God's nature in the Bible. It shapes everything He does. His love is holy love. His justice is holy justice. His mercy is holy mercy.

Because God is holy, sin matters. We cannot treat Him like He is common. He is near to His people, but He is never small.

This is why worship begins with reverence. We do not come to God as equals. We come as creatures before the holy Creator.

God Is Love

The Bible teaches that God does not merely show love. God is love. Love is part of His eternal nature.

God's love is not weak, soft, or blind. His love is holy and true. He loves sinners enough to call them away from sin. He loves His people enough to correct them, guide them, and keep them.

The greatest display of God's love is Jesus Christ. God did not wait for mankind to climb up to Him. He sent His Son to save sinners.

When we ask, what is God like, the cross gives a clear answer. God is holy enough to judge sin and loving enough to provide salvation through His Son.

God Is Just and Righteous

God's justice means He always does what is right. He never bends the truth. He never ignores evil. He never makes a corrupt judgment.

The Rock: his work is perfect, for all his ways are just. A God of faithfulness who does no wrong, just and right is he.

This can comfort us and sober us at the same time.

It comforts us because injustice will not last forever. God sees every wrong. Nothing is hidden from Him.

It sobers us because we also stand before a just God. Our sin is not small. We need mercy, not excuses.

God Is Merciful and Gracious

God's mercy means He shows compassion to the guilty, weak, and needy. His grace means He gives favor that sinners do not deserve.

The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

The characteristics of God are seen in how He deals with sinners. He does not delight in cruelty. He is patient. He calls people to repentance.

Mercy does not mean God ignores sin. Mercy means God provides a way for sinners to be forgiven without denying His justice. That way is Jesus Christ.

At the cross, God's justice and mercy meet. Sin is judged, and sinners can be saved.

God Is Faithful

God's faithfulness means He keeps His Word. He does not lie, forget, change His mind, or fail to do what He has promised.

God is faithful, through whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

People change. Plans fall apart. Feelings rise and fall. But God remains faithful.

This matters when life feels uncertain. The believer does not rest on perfect circumstances. The believer rests on the faithful character of God.

Here are a few ways God's faithfulness helps His people:

• We can trust His promises.
• We can pray with confidence.
• We can endure suffering with hope.
• We can repent when we sin.
• We can keep following Him when life is hard.

God's faithfulness is not based on our strength. It rests on who He is.

God Is Wise

God's wisdom means He always knows what is best and always chooses the right way to accomplish His purposes.

Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!

We often see only one piece of the story. God sees the beginning, middle, and end. He knows every heart, every motive, and every outcome.

This does not mean His ways will always make sense to us. Sometimes they will not. But God's wisdom calls us to trust Him even when we cannot explain what He is doing.

The attributes of God remind us that His wisdom is never separated from His goodness. He is not only smarter than us. He is better than us.

God Is Good

God's goodness means He is always right, kind, generous, and worthy of trust. Everything good begins with Him.

God's goodness is not measured by whether life is easy. The Bible shows many faithful people who suffered. Yet God remained good.

His goodness is seen in creation, daily provision, answered prayer, discipline, forgiveness, and salvation.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation nor turning shadow.

When you doubt God's goodness, look at Christ. Jesus shows the heart of the Father. He healed, taught, corrected, welcomed sinners, and gave His life for His people.

God Is Unchanging

God does not grow, weaken, improve, or decline. He is perfect forever.

For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.

This is one of the most comforting characteristics of God. His love does not expire. His truth does not shift. His holiness does not fade. His promises do not become outdated.

The world changes. Culture changes. Human opinions change. But God remains the same.

Because God is unchanging, His Word remains trustworthy. What He reveals about Himself in Scripture is not temporary. It is true for every generation.

God Is Near and Personal

The Bible reveals God as high above creation, yet near to His people. He is not distant or cold. He hears, speaks, guides, comforts, and saves.

The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.

This is part of God's nature in the Bible that many people miss. God is not an idea. He is the living God.

He knows His people by name. He sees their tears. He welcomes their prayers. He cares for their needs.

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

God's nearness does not remove His holiness. It makes His grace more amazing. The holy God invites weak people to draw near through Jesus Christ.

Why the Characteristics of God Matter

The characteristics of God are not meant to stay in our heads only. They shape how we live.

When we know God is holy, we take sin seriously.

When we know God is loving, we stop believing He is against us.

When we know God is just, we do not have to seek revenge.

When we know God is merciful, we run to Him instead of hiding.

When we know God is faithful, we keep trusting Him.

When we know God is wise, we surrender our plans.

When we know God is good, we worship even in hard seasons.

The more we know the character of God, the more we see ourselves clearly. We are not God. We need Him. We depend on Him for life, forgiveness, wisdom, and hope.

The Character of God Is Revealed Most Clearly in Jesus

Jesus Christ shows us the Father. He is not a lesser picture of God. He is God the Son, who came in the flesh.

The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.

In Jesus, we see holiness without harshness, love without compromise, truth without cruelty, and mercy without weakness.

At the cross, we see the seriousness of sin and the depth of God's love. At the empty tomb, we see God's power over death.

The characteristics of God lead us to worship, but they also lead us to salvation. The holy God we have sinned against is the same merciful God who sent His Son to save.

How Should We Respond to God's Nature?

God does not reveal Himself so we can stay the same. He reveals Himself so we will trust, worship, obey, and love Him.

A right response includes:

• Worshiping God for who He is
• Confessing sin instead of hiding it
• Trusting His promises
• Following His Word
• Receiving salvation through Jesus Christ
• Growing in Christlike character

The goal is not just to know more about God. The goal is to know God.

This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.
